POVERTY
I heard my name in the mouth of the swine,
All my honor you taken away
And my shame laid bare to the creatures of this earth
With all the fingers pointed at me in curse
Even death shy away from me
And within my heart I begged him, murmuring.
Nothing left here, if not the tears under this eyes.
Today my voice crawl under my throat with no strength.
Empty, Oh! oh!! with a sigh,
Poverty? The curse of my ancestors?
With your rope tide around my neck choked,
Dragging me down the sunken sand.
Oh! Mawu, stretch your embrace on this famine,
And lay your heavy breast on my lips,
In my difficult breathing,
I will suckle your milk of manner.
